  RICHARD SPEEDY is a US photographer and lover of the outdoors who, a few years ago, decided to go hiking in the mountains of the Cañón del Cobre (Copper Canyon) in the state of Chihuahua, México.  What he saw there captured his heart, and his photographer's imagination, forever.  His images of this area, and of its people –some of whom grew very dear to him—are deeply respectful.  They communicate a sense of mystery in such a way that we're left feeling how absolutely important it is that the mystery remain hidden and unexplained.  Speedy's pictures take away my breath and touch my heart.
  RICHARD SPEEDY es fotógrafo estadounidense y amante de la naturaleza, quien hace unos años se fue a acampar en las montañas del Cañón del Cobre en el estado de Chihuahua, México.  Lo que vio allá le cautivó el corazón, y su imaginación de fotógrafo, para siempre.  Sus imágenes de esta área, y de la gente que allí vive –algunos de ellos llegando a ser muy queridos por él— son profundamente respetuosas. Comunican una sensación de misterio de manera que nos dejan sintiendo la absoluta importancia de que el misterio permanezca oculta y sin explicación.  Las fotografías de Speedy me quitan el aliento y tocan mi corazón.

  BYRON BRAUCHLI, former Fulbright-García Robles Scholar of my generation, is an extraordinary photographer who works a great deal with alternative developing methods.  Brauchli's images – at the same time austere and tender— for me communicate a deep awareness of texture, which makes his pictures living and intensely tactile.  The great Mexican poet and writer Octavio Paz wrote, "Nothing but light.  Nothing but light against light".   For me Brauchli's photographs communicate a deep joy in light and its play, not only with the objects he photographs but also with itself.  There is so clearly here a deep love for the light of México, which reveals so much, which hides so much.
  BYRON BRAUCHLI, excompañero mío de la beca Fulbright-García Robles, es otro fotógrafo extraordinario.  Trabaja mucho con métodos alternativos de revelación.  Sus imágenes –austeras y suaves a la vez — para mí comunican una profunda conciencia de textura, convirtiendo sus fotografías en algo muy vivo y intensamente táctil.  El magno escritor y poeta mexicano Octavio Paz dijo, "Nada sino la luz.  No hay nada sino la luz contra la luz".  Para mí las fotografías de Brauchli comunican un profundo regocijo en la luz y su juego -- no únicamente con los objetos fotografiados sino que también consigo mismo, en precisamente ese sentido de que habla Paz.  He aquí, muy nítidamente, un amor a la luz de México, que nos revela tanto y que tanto nos oculta.
