AGUA Y PIEDRA: CERVANTES ESTRENA MÚSICA DE MÉXICO EN WASHINGTON, DC Y LUEGO INTERPRETA UN CONCIERTO PARA CELEBRAR COMEXUS… miercoles 6 noviembre, instituto cultural mexicano de washington, DC.  Más informes al 202-728-1628.

Me da gran placer anunciar que el miércoles 6 de noviembre interpreto un concierto llamado Agua y Piedra/Water and Stone: Música reciente de México y Estados Unidos, en el hermoso recinto del Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Washington, DC.  En este concierto interpretaré el estreno mundial de Flor Robada #2 de Marcela Rodríguez; los estrenos en Estados Unidos de la 5a Sonata de Federico Ibarra Groth y de la Toccata y Preludio de Horacio Uribe Duarte; y los estrenos en Washington, DC de la Serenata: i carry your heart with me de Olga Gorelli; de las Cuatro fantasías para piano de Laurence (Laurie Altman), y de für Eloísa de Jack Fortner.

El Instituto Cultural Mexicano cuenta con un íntimo foro que se alberga dentro de la bellísima casona que hasta hace unos pocos años era la Embajada de México en Estados Unidos.  Hoy en día el edificio es un espacio que se dedica al cien por ciento y con gran imaginación, a la difusión de la cultura mexicana en toda su riqueza, con espacios para exposiciones de artes visuales así como el exquisito pequeño foro de concierto con excelente piano.  

Este concierto es una ocasión particularmente feliz para mí.  En ello se celebran no únicamente el unir las voces musicales de unos distinguidos creadores de ambos naciones, sino también la realización de un proyecto que hubiera tenido otro desenlace si no fuera por el apoyo de la Fundación Caritativa Bossak-Heilbrun.  A dicha Fundación le pareció adecuado, en junio de este año, otorgarme una beca de Artista Individual con el fin de preparar tres de las obras que toco en este concierto: la 5a Sonata de Federico Ibarra, la Flor Robada de Marcela Rodríguez, y las Cuatro Fantasías de Laurence Altman.   El reconocimiento y apoyo de la Fundación para el intercambio musical entre nuestros dos países merece la gratitud de toda persona a quien este intercambio representa un imprescindible modo de comunicación entre personas y naciones.

Tendré otra oportunidad de celebrar la música como avenida de comunicación binacional cuando, dos días después por la noche del viernes 8, interpreto la misma música en un concierto que será la clausura de una reunión de COMEXUS (Comisión México-Estados Unidos para el Intercambio Académico y Cultural).  Me gratifica enormemente celebrar con la música, las contribuciones que dicha organización ha brindado a la comunicación binacional. Solemos pensar de una "organización binacional" como una que se concentra principalmente en economía, en ciencia política, tal vez en hidrología o sistemas agropecuarios.  No cabe duda que todas estas ciencias hacen una contribución enorme al bienestar humano.  Sin embargo, COMEXUS no se limite a estas contribuciones … ¡como se ve por la elección de clausurar su reunión con un concierto de música de distinguidos creadores de ambos países! Tal elección manifiesta un apoyo para las artes -y en especial la música- que para mí es tan contundente como es emocionante.  Merece no únicamente mencionar sino alabarse y –como el apoyo de la Fundación Bossak-Heilbrun- el agradecimiento de todos para quienes la comunicación entre personas que la música puede posibilitar, representa un elemento esencial de las relaciones entre países.

¡Ojalá que puedan asistir para compartir conmigo esta maravillosa música!  Si no pueden presenciar, les ruego adelantar este mensaje a amigos y familiares que se encuentren en el área de Washington para que ellos puedan asistir al concierto del miércoles 6 de noviembre -evento que realmente será tanto celebración como concierto.

Me da mucho orgullo y placer anunciar que se me ha otorgado una beca de la Bossak-Heilbrun Charitable Foundation (Fundación Caritativa Bossak-Heilbrun).  El premio es una Beca de Artista Individual cuyo propósito, citando la carta de la propia fundación, es de "desarrollar más extensamente … repertorio para tocar en foros de concierto en Washington, DC, en otras ciudades en los Estados Unidos y en México."

WATER & STONE:  CERVANTES PREMIERES MEXICAN MUSIC IN WASHINGTON, DC  AND THEN PERFORMS A CONCERT IN HONOR OF COMEXUS … WEDNESDAY/miercoles 6 noviembre, instituto cultural mexicano de washington, DC.  Más informes al 202-728-1628.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that on Wednesday 6 November I will perform a concert called Agua y Piedra/Water and Stone: Recent Music of México and the United States, in the beautiful concert hall of the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington, DC.  I'll be playing the world premiere of Flor Robada #2 of Marcela Rodríguez; the US premieres of the 5th Piano Sonata of Federico Ibarra Groth and of the Preludio and Toccata of Horacio Uribe Duarte; and the Washington area premieres of Olga Gorelli's Serenade: I carry your heart with me; of the Four Piano Fantasies of Laurence (Laurie) Altman; and of für Eloísa of Jack Fortner. 

The Mexican Cultural Institute is housed in an exceptionally beautiful building which until a few years ago was the Mexican Embassy to the US.  Its concert space  is a lovely, intimate hall.  These days the building is a space dedicated completely –and with enormous imagination- to the dissemination of Mexican culture in all its richness, with spaces for art exhibitions as well as the exquisite small concert hall with an excellent piano.

This concert is a particularly felicitous occasion for me. It represents not only a joining of the voices of distinguished creators of both countries, but also the realization of a project which probably would have developed differently had it not been for the support of the Bossak-Heilbrun Charitable Foundation.   In June of this year that Foundation saw fit to award me an Individual Artist Grant, with the goal of preparing three of the works which I will perform in this concert: the Fifth Sonata of Federico Ibarra, the Flor Robada of Marcela Rodríguez, and the Four Fantasies of Laurence Altman. The Foundaton's recognition and support of musical exchange between our two countries merits the gratitude of everyone to whom this kind of interchange represents an essential mode of communication between people and nations.

I will have another opportunity to celebrate music as an avenue of binational communication when, two days later on Friday 8 November, I'll perform the same music in a concert which will be the closing event in a meeting of COMEXUS (US-México Commission for Academic and Cultural Exchange). It is exceptionally  gratifying for me to celebrate with music the contributions which this organization has made to binational communication.  We tend to think of a "binational organization" as one which devotes its attention principally to economics, en political science, perhaps to hydrology or agricultural systems.  There is no doubt whatsoever that these sciences make an enormous contribution to human wellbeing. Nevertheless, COMEXUS does not limit itself to these contributions … as evidenced by the choice to close their meeting with a concert of music by distinguished composers of both countries! Such a choice represents a level of support for the arts –and especially for music- which for me is enormously moving.  It deserves not only mention but high praise and –like the support of the Bossak-Heilbrun Foundation- the gratitude of all individuals for whom the communication between people which music can make possible represents an essential part of the relationships among countries.

I hope you'll be able to attend and share this marvelous music with me! If you aren't able to attend, please forward this message to any family or friends you may have in the Washington, DC area so that they may attend the concert on Wednesday 6 November – an event which will truly be as much a celebration as a concert.

I am proud and delighted to announce that I have been awarded a grant from the Bossak-Heilbrun Charitable Foundation.  The award is an Individual Artist Grant whose purpose, quoting the Foundation's letter, is to help "further develop …  repertoire to be used in … performance venues in Washington, DC, other cities throughout the US, and Mexico."

MARCH 2002 – CERVANTES PERFORMS IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL, CERVANTES INTERPRETA EN LA CAPITAL DE ESTADOS UNIDOS
 It gives me great pleasure to announce that I'll be performing in Washington, DC, in two concerts during the week of March 22 to 29.  In these two concerts, I'll be interpreting the premiere in the United States of the Divertimento for Piano and Orchestra of Mexican composer Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras as soloist with the Washington Symphony Orchestra; and the premiere in the Washington, DC area of Fuego (Fire) a new work by Marcela Rodríguez whose world premiere I had the privilege of performing in the Festival Internacional Cervantino this past October.  On the same program with Fuego, I'll also play Como el Agua en el Agua, until this past summer Rodríguez' only work for solo piano in almost twenty years. … Me da gran placer anunciar que interpreto en Washington, DC en dos conciertos durante la semana del 22 – 29 de marzo.  En estos dos conciertos, toco el estreno en Estados Unidos del Divertimento para Piano y Orquesta del gran maestro Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras de México y el estreno en Washington, DC de Fuego, una obra nueva de la reconocida compositora mexicana Marcela Rodríguez, pieza cuyo estreno mundial tuve el privilegio de interpretar en el Festival Internacional Cervantino en octubre.  En el mismo programa con Fuego, también toco Como el Agua en el Agua , hasta este verano pasado la única obra para piano que había escrito la maestra Rodríguez en casi veinte años.

My performance of the Rodríguez works will be part of the Clausura Concert of a weeklong musical group residency devoted to the music of maestra Rodríguez.  Those of you who remember my activity last spring will remember the Muchas Voces-Many Voices group residency, whose focus was the music of Mexican women composers and of which I was – proudly – the artist/organizer.   I am even more proud to say that this new residency, Portrait of a Composer: the Music of Marcela Rodríguez, is in a very real sense the child of Muchas Voces.  The original residency partners – the Mexican Cultural Institute together with the Graduate Center for Studies in Latin American Music of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music of the Catholic University of America, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Organization of American States (OAS) – decided to join forces again for this new residency which celebrates the creation of one of México's most eminent women composers of today. … Mi interpretación de las obras de la maestra Rodríguez forma parte del concierto de Clausura de una residencia musical de una semana que se dedica a la música de la maestra.  Aquellos de ustedes que se acuerdan de mi actividad concertística durante la primavera del 2001 recordarán la residencia grupal Muchas Voces-Many Voices , que tenía por enfoque la música de compositoras mexicanas, y de que fui – orgullosamente – la artista/organizadora.  Me da aún mas orgullo decir que esta nueva residencia, Retrato de una Compositora: la Música de Marcela Rodríguez, es en un sentido muy real, la hija de Muchas Voces.  Los patrocinadores originales – el Instituto Cultural de México de Washington, el Centro de Estudios graduados de Música Latinoaméricana de la Escuela de Música Benjamin T. Rome de la Universidad Católica de América, el Museo Nacional de la Mujer en las Artes, y la Organisación de Estados Américanos (OEA) – decidieron de juntar fuerzas de nuevo para esta nueva residencia que celebra la música de una de las más renombradas compositoras actuales de México.

A few days later on Wednesday 27 March, I will be performing as soloist with the Washington Symphony Orchestra in their concert Mexican Rhythms, a gala celebration of the music of México in honor of the birthday of Benito Juárez, sponsored and hosted by the Embassy of México.  I am delighted to announce that in that concert we'll be bringing the US premiere of the Divertimento for Piano and Orchestra by yet another eminent Mexican composer – maestro Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras – to Washington, DC area listeners.  This is a tuneful and rhythmically vital work with moments of great lyricism.  I am proud to have the privilege of performing its US premiere with the support of the Embassy of México, and delighted at the Orchestra's decision to program this work.  … Pocos días después, el miercoles 27 de marzo, interpreto con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Washington en el Teatro Warner, en su concierto Ritmos de México, una gala celebración de la música de México para honorar el cumpleaños de Benito Juárez.  Me da gran placer anunciar que en dicho concierto brindamos el estreno en Estados Unidos del Divertimento para Piano y Orquesta de aún otro muy distinguido compositor mexicano, el maestro Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras. Esta es una obra llena de melodía, con gran vitalidad rítmica y momentos de sumo lirismo.  Estoy orgullosa por tener el privilegio de interpretar su estreno en Estados Unidos con el patrocinio de la Embajada de México, y muy complacida por la decisión de la Sinfónica de programar esta obra.
