    THINKING ABOUT MONK AFTER
    HEARING ANA CERVANTES
    PLAY THE NEW PIANO

speed is not how you get there
you get there with your pockets full of marbles
    perambulating over thin ice
in your new black leather shoes
you've left the horses tied to a tree
angular, everything is mathematical, dark sky
you come to a small island with twelve pianos
the trees are protecting the pianos
the multi-colored marbles are ready for music
    floating on a three-dimensional staff
    delicately cantilevered off-axis, the notes
make the best of equal temperament
you find the water, the sweet water
the perfect note in an astringent counterpoint
it is crystal clear water, melodious
the logic is deep inside the notes
floating in vast pools of space
Bud always said Playing fast is not the same as rushing
    exponentially off-kilter
    each incisive note
    pinpoints
    exactly where you are
    returning to shore
it is summer now, the horses
were stolen by the uncle of the brother-in-law
    who runs the music school
